WHERE DO I GET A NXDN UID (Number)

Many have been pointed to the site already, but I need to add a few more notes to this,
the site is http://nxmanager.net If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will find a block where you enter your information in at.
PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND
1 Please use CAPS to enter your information into the database.
2 There are only 65519 UID’s that NXDN technology USES unlike DMR.
3 YES, THERE CAN BE DUPES, but we in some cases use OTAA to transmit our CALL
4 SUGGESTED UID; use the last 5 digits of your DMR ID, that is fine and will work
UNLESS it is above 65519, then you will need to use another numeric.

This is not my rule or evil way of doing things, this is how the CAI of NXDN is laid out.

I know that VHF marine band will transition to NXDN forthcoming, but I hear they are taking out the UID and will have the option to transmit the vessel name or callsign of vessel (rumor is it will be just plain 4800 baud / 6.25 bandwidth digital FDMA, but that could change)

SO, please, kindly keep it within the parameters of 1 to 65519, and even though you CAN enter your full DMR ID, the new database that will be put together forthcoming, will be used to parse your information for the DASHBOARD logs.
Once we have a newer database built, tested and ready for prime use, Bill N2WNS or one of the other admins will chime in and let you know.

NXDN and MMDVM

What is all this buzz about MMDVM and NXDN and ???????? other homebrew kits that are joining the Digital Ham Radio Era?

Well, like most forms of digital technology comes advancement of it. In this case it came from Jonathan Naylor G4KLX and his project for D-Star, Fusion and P25 (aka P25NX).
*I only know of those modes from Jonathan
But for some of you, you already know what it is and does. For others, it’s where you can take micro-computing to the next communications level, and have a “repeater controller” doing all the hard work with simple radio gear, and OR a hotspot 2-way now.

Here is where things stand at the moment, from the MMDVM Yahoo group, by way of Jonathan:
“I have merged he NXDN branch for both the modem firmware and the host into master. This means that the default version of the code is now NXDN enabled.

It has basic networking built-in, talking to the single MMDVM NXDN reflector. I posted details of how to use it a couple of weeks ago. I am working on making the software compatible with the official NXDN amateur network, and in due course, that, along with some form of gateway will be released. At that time the MMDVM NXDN reflector will be retired.

Please note that the extra processing load of the NXDN code means that it isn’t possible to run five modes on an Arduino Due. Aside from NXDN, D-Star and DMR are the next heaviest protocols for processing, so it may be possible to run (say) NXDN and P25 on a Due, and maybe more. The more powerful STM32 and Teensy based systems can easily run all five modes. I believe firmware for the ZUMSpot and MMDVM_HS boards will also be available soon.

In unrelated news. I’ve been adding FCS support into the YSF Gateway and taking the opportunity to clean the code up also. I did a first test this evening trying to log into FCS001-20 but with no success 🙁 It’s early days though.

So with that being said, the next level of NXDN and the Homebrew world is network linking, which is still being tested at this time, though the MMDVM network has a function for linking, it is not currently connected to the NXCore 65000 relm at this time.
I will let you know when that chapter comes into play, but do expect to see a SURGE of new users to say hello to!

NXDN CAI, Now accepted worldwide.

JVCKENWOOD Corporation (http://www.jvckenwood.co.jp/en/) announces that the NXDN Common Air Interface (CAI) was accepted at the Study Group 5 (SG5) meeting of the International Telecommunications Union Radiocommunications Sector (ITU-R) held in November 2016 and in Report M.2014-3, published in February 2017. This inclusion is highly significant since it represents official recognition – by the organization in charge of international standards – of NXDN as an international digital land mobile system, paving the way for its even wider adoption on a global  scale.

NXDN is an open standard narrowband digital protocol employing 6.25 kHz and 12.5 kHz FDMA technology to comply with frequency coordination requirements in many countries; it supports a comprehensive radio system including trunked, non-trunked and direct mobile-to-mobile communication. NXDN was developed by JVCKENWOOD in cooperation with Icom Incorporated to offer an alternative for the Land Mobile Radio (LMR) industry that would facilitate development of more affordable digital radio products that would satisfy the FCC narrowbanding mandate. It is also intended to help countries that lack sufficient frequency resources for their public safety agencies and business operators.

This future-proof protocol offers numerous advantages. For example, 6.25 kHz dual-channel systems can  be configured to fit within a 12.5 kHz channel, effectively doubling spectrum efficiency compared to an analog FM system occupying the same channel. Two NXDN channels can be allocated as voice/voice, voice/data, or data/data. Compared to analog FM, it provides wider coverage and superior multipath characteristics, but at the same time NXDN systems support mixed digital/analog operation, thus facilitating smooth migration to a narrowband digital system. With these and other advantages such as clear voice quality and strong security, it has proved highly successful and the number of NXDN radio terminals supplied into mission-critical non-mission critical applications has grown rapidly. NXDN has truly become a leading digital protocol for mobile communications.

NXDN is implemented in the KENWOOD-brand NEXEDGE product range, which since 2008 has offered digital conventional and trunked radio solutions to meet the diverse requirements of a wide range of government and industry users. And 2015 saw the debut of Gen2, the second generation of NEXEDGE products, with enhanced features, flexibility and performance – including the capability of linking up to 1,000 sites or 24 networks. NEXEDGE solutions are leveraging the full potential of the NXDN protocol, now officially recognized by the ITU.

I want to make something clear that has come to my attention. When there are new users coming on board and the UID Or Talk Proceed Tone, or wrong group SELCALL PTT is used, please, don’t condemn these folks.
They are new members just like we all were at one time or another to NXDN. Promote this network like it is the best thing you have going. You use it, locally or on 65000, promote this network for more users and owners. 52 sites listed and only 39 on the network,
this is not a COUNTRY CLUB exclusive network folks. We promote the use and experiments of NXDN because it’s becoming the normal mode easily to acquire for some people. Just like DMR, but we hold ourselves a little higher than that side of
Digital. Digital is here and will be here for the long haul. Let’s not get in a twit over a Talk Proceed Tone, or dupe ID’s or wrong talk group setting in the PTT SELCALL. Help them out professionally. Because that is what we do.

I am super busy with commercial work I am about ready to explode. Your help to this makes things go better, and get stronger. I am still working with an independent group to create a software bridge between the Icoms and Kenwoods so we can patch 65000 back together. Right now asking for free help is very light, and this group I have approached is tied up with high level Stuff that makes their paychecks. Hang in there, it is in the works.

Let’s keep this rolling strong, 2 new repeater owners have joined the network, Ohio and another Canada station returned.

Greetings and welcome to the NXDN Ham Radio Blog. Wanted to update a few thing and share a link.

We are working on designing a software “bridge” between the Kenwood’s and Icom’s. We now have several “core servers” around the U.S. with 2 of them here in Florida. If you’re interested in joining the NXDN network, please let me know and I will get you the information you need. We welcome any BRAND of NXDN manufacturers and encourage you to join the network, EVEN YOU WEST COAST PEOPLE OVER YAWNDER and ya’ll friends to the north of the border.

I have been rather busy on the commercial side of Kenwood Type C trunking, putting up a few sites here and there, and working on getting our 36th site prep’ed and ready to go.

Status of the NXREF and What Is Happening

Greetings all,
Here is a quick run up of what is in the pressure cooker….
NXREF UPDATES TO ROLL OUT IN THE COMING MONTHS.

A & B; A Bug Fix for the Kenwood side of the NXREF. One is with the turn on / turn off messages, and the other is dealing with the heartbeat for the UDP ports, since KWD uses 2 UDP ports.

New Features: Talk Group Linking and Authentication, a simple Public PKM style (something like IRLP) to add security to the NXDN Network. If the access code does not match, no link will be established.
Talk Group Linking; this will allow for Local, Regional, State, or even Area Wide uses.
Florida uses TG 1200 for Florida Wide, and Tampa is using 1201 for West Central Florida. As an example.

Antrak Turkey adds new repeater to thier network..

Dear Gang,
We setup our new NXDN repeater (VHF- R2- 145.650 MHz) to new location over the 17th and 18th weekend of August.

We linked this repeater to our other NXDN repeater (VHF-R7-145.775 MHz) which is located at our club building via 5Ghz link. Everything seems working now. In next days, we are planning to re-establish NXDN Reflector link via Raspberry PI.

 

Another First – Maybe soon!

Today I loaded the Kenwood version of the NXREF on a Raspberry Pi in TURKEY – yes, the country Turkey.

If all goes well, on Wednesday, we hope to put Turkey on the WW NXDN net.  TA3AS and a club in Turkey have their NXR-710/810 repeater equipped and ready.  We’ll be conducting final testing on Wednesday.

Firsts:

  • First test of Static IP address to private address for Kenwood
  • First NON-VPN connected Kenwood to the WW NXDN net
  • First test of a public Kenwood NXDN reflector
  • First intercontinental Link up (we’ve already done the first transcontinental and first international version of same).

Stay tuned, Wednesday could be an interesting day for Amateur Radio NXDN!
